What is DSL?
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Internet service connects a computer to the Internet. It uses your phone’s existing two twisted copper wires phone line coupled with switches at each end of your phone line so it does not disrupt incoming or outgoing phone service.
The DSL service connection to the Internet is already digital, so it does not need anything to convert from analog to digital. DSL does not disrupt voice messages on your phone line because the Internet DSL connection uses different frequencies from voice.
DSL is on its own frequency so it can encode larger amounts of data. It can also create Internet connections which are fifty times faster than those made by standard modems.
DSL offers more consistent bandwidth than cable modem. This is a plus in multiple user situations.
Distance limitations can affect the DSL transmission.
Advantages of DSL Internet:
DSL is convenient. It does not disrupt receiving or sending phone calls. DSL connection can always open so you can have immediate Internet connection any time of the day or night. There is no time lost waiting for dial up or other connection.
DSL Service is much faster than regular modem or dial-up service. This can be a real time and money saver to a business. Usually, DSL Internet connection runs at 1.5 megabytes/second as compared to 56 kilobits/second for a regular modem service. This means a service that is twenty-five times faster with DSL. Thus, you can download movies, play games or send and receive data faster!
You don’t have to install a new connection for DSL. It uses the existing line of your local telephone service provider. This is also a cost saving.
Often there is no equipment to buy. DSL providers often give or rent you a modem with your DSL service package.
DSL Internet service is very economical compared to other services like T-1.
Customers or clients who are trying to visit your website or conduct business with you over the Internet will never experience busy signals or dropped calls. This means they are a lot more likely to revisit your website and to tell others about you. Higher traffic on your website translates into more revenue!
